Membership Admission

The CMIR membership is designed to comply with the current continuing education and re-accreditation model promoted by the government in line with international trend. The criteria for admission to membership are laid down by CMIR Governing Council, and will be annually reviewed for the quality control, complaint and removal procedures for the membership Register. These will be available at the start of each annual registration period.

Applications for membership should be made on the appropriate form, supported by relevant qualifications and supporting documents. A formal legally binding declaration form is also required on applying for membership.


Admission Criteria

1. Holds a proven graduate or post-graduate qualification in Chinese medicine and acupuncture from a recognized medical and/or healthcare professional training institutions;

2. Demonstrate sufficient professional knowledge with proof of relevant employment and qualifications for admission as members at the admission interview and competent assessment;

3. Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of written and spoken English

4. Be of good character with integrity and honesty, with no criminal convictions, nor any records of expelsion from other professional bodies due to misconducts;

5. Satisfy CMIR code for health and fitness to practice

6. Satisfy the interview panel for membership admission with appropriate competent assessment

7. Evidence of up to date knowledge with records of approved CPD.


Routs to Membership

1. Auto-admission by graduating from CMIR postgraduate diploma course organised by the AcuMedic Foundation in collaboration with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Guangxi medical University.

2. Through individual application and interview according to admission criteria


Grades of Membership


Full Professional Membership

Full professional members are those who have been actively practicing Chinese medicine and acupuncture for a minimum of three consecutive years Have at least a first degree and/or have a first or completed the approved diploma course in Chinese medicine or equivalent qualifications recognised by the Institute as appropriate for membership. The full membership is approved by the Accreditation Committee.

Accreditation is by the Accreditation Committee primarily available to doctors and healthcare professionals who have completed the Institute’s postgraduate diploma course and successfully passed the examination set by the State Administration of Chinese Medicine, China. This is organised annually by the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. A register is kept to ensure that proper standards and safety in practice is provided for patients seeking treatment. Furthermore, registration and a current valid practice certificate are issued for this category of membership.

Associates

Associates are medical and healthcare professionals who have completed relevant professional training, and demonstrate satisfactory professional skill, and interest in the global development of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and who support the integration of Chinese Medicine within Western medical practice. A proven post-graduate qualification and at least one year’s professional experience are required. Associates as professional practitioners, are upgraded to full professional member upon completion of relevant qualifications as defined above in the full professional membership section. The Accreditation Committee is responsible for this process.


Fellowship & Honorary Membership

Fellow is the highest class of Institute membership and is a mark of advanced professional standing and distinction by their academic achievements, research or outstanding contributions to Chinese medicine. A fellow must have been a member of CMIR for at least three years before being nominated for fellowship. However, the process of fellowship is by nomination and election of the steering committee for outstanding contribution to the professionalism of Chinese medicine.

Honorary Members are fully qualified doctors and specialists whose memberships are given by the nomination and approval of the Governing Council.


Overseas Membership

Overseas members are invited from all qualified medical doctors outside EU, who supports the aims of CMIR and/or those who promote the integration of medicine either in clinical or academic activities.

Membership Annual Renewal

All members will have to re-apply annually to continue their professional membership. Membership will be de-registered if a member:

a) have ceased to meet the current membership admission criteria, or

b) make a false or incorrect statement on the application form,

c) where the member fails to provide a satisfactory response to misconduct disciplinary decisions.

If a member applying for membership annual renewal is the subject of a complaint or a professional misconduct currently under disciplinary investigation, re-registration may be deferred or suspended until the complaint has been resolved or the disciplinary procedures have been concluded.


Re-admission to Membership

Should the circumstances of a suspended member or removed membership changed which enable the practitioner re-establish compliance within three years, the application of his/her re-registration could be considered by re-applying membership with sufficient evidence for changed circumstances in terms of professional conduct and competence for good practice.
