Continue Education – Chinese Medical Council (UK)
CPD Obligation
Continuing professional development (CPD) is defined as 'any process or activity that provides added value to the capability of the professional through the increase in knowledge, skills and personal qualities necessary for the appropriate execution of professional and technical duties, often termed competence.' CPD obligations exist to help ensure that CMIR members maintain their competence to practice. All CMIR members are obliged to do CPD every year. This is true no matter where in the world the member lives or what sort of work is undertaken. Only fully retired members are exempt from this obligation.
CPD Requirements
Members of the CMIR are required to do the following every five years:
• At least 30 hours per year attended activities from the CMIR accredited training courses/CPD programmes
• At least 12 hours of professional development in other subjects relevant to your own CPD needs, or
• 18 hours of self-directed learning
Members who refuse to comply with our requests to see their CPD record sheets could, after a series of warnings, be suspended from the CMIR Register.
Types of CPD
There are two types of CPD: structured, which generally involves course work, and general, i.e. anything else. Structured CPD denotes any activity done in a classroom or lecture setting, whether with other people in a room or via online learning, with specific stated learning outcomes.
Examples of structured CPD would be CMIR conferences, regional seminars, CMIR CPD programmes, training courses, conferences, medical trip to China, online or distance learning, certificates, diplomas, relevant additional degrees, etc. Any relevant study or activity that enhances your professional development and ability to practice in profession is valid CPD.
